John Conyers quits House judiciary committee amid sexual harassment allegations

Calling Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., "an icon", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., broke from the notion of unilaterally believing accusers of sexual harassment - and her own "zero tolerance" - saying Sunday that Conyers deserves "due process".

The flurry of activity Sunday comes as Congress prepares to return from its Thanksgiving break, amid increasing attention on the issue of sexual harassment with multiple men in entertainment, media and politics facing allegations of misconduct.

"Ranking Member Conyers has a 50-year legacy of advancing the cause of justice, and my job moving forward is to continue that critical work", he added.

Judiciary Committee's ranking member, pending the outcome of the ethics probe.

Conyers said he denies the accusations and "very much" looks forward to "vindicating" himself before the House Ethics Committee, which announced last week that it was opening an investigation into the accusations against Conyers.

"He will do the right thing in terms of what he knows about his situation", Pelosi said.

Pelosi suggested Sunday that the allegations against Franken - including that he kissed a woman against her will - were less serious than those against Moore, who is accused by one woman of sexual advances toward her when she was 14. "Any credible accusation must be reviewed by the Ethics Committee expeditiously".

The House this week is expected to vote on legislation to mandate sexual harassment training for all lawmakers and staffers, a move backers consider just the first step in reforming the culture on Capitol Hill.

Here's what we know about allegations against Michigan Democratic Congressman John Conyers.

"We are strengthened by due process".

Conyers is accused of sexually harassing female staff members, and a secret settlement was paid out to one of his accusers.

Ms Pelosi declined to say whether Mr Conyers would suffer any immediate penalty over the allegations.

Pelosi, speaking during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, called the allegations against Conyers a "big distraction".

"The whole system needs to have a comprehensive shift", Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier told ABC's This Week.
