Freed terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed rails against India: Nawaz Sharif
Nov 27, 2017, 01:03
"The Pakistani government now has an opportunity to demonstrate its seriousness in confronting all forms of terrorism, without distinction, by arresting and charging Hafiz Saeed for his crimes", the White House said.
Saeed was placed under house arrest in January while Sharif was still prime minister, a move that drew praise from India, long furious at Saeed's continued freedom in Pakistan.
Saeed has been detained periodically by the Pakistani government since the 2008 attacks in Mumbai.
Responding to the India's reaction, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Faisal in a statement issued late Friday said that "Pakistan remains committed to the implementation of UNSC 1267 sanctions regime and has taken several steps in this regard".
Saeed was speaking to huge of JuD activists at the Jamia Masjid Al-Qadisa at Chauburji after releasing.
It was in 2012 that the United States announced its offer of $10 million reward "for information that brings Saeed to justice", Nauert mentioned.
"I'm happy that no allegation against me was proved, which could have done damage to me, or my country's interests", Saeed later told supporters.
"The United States is deeply concerned that Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) leader Hafiz Saeed has been released from house arrest in Pakistan", a statement from the State Department declared on Friday.
Saeed ran the Jamaat-Ud-Dawa organization (Party of the Faith), which is thought to be a front for the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba militant group.
Saeed blamed India for his incarceration in Pakistan, saying "Pakistan's rulers detained me on the aspiration of Modi due to their friendship with him".
Saeed's release suggests Pakistan's military, which has controlled the nation for much of its 70-year history, is once again asserting control over the country's civilian authorities and that terrorism suspects won't be genuinely prosecuted by Islamabad, said Harsh Pant, an worldwide relations professor at King's College London.
The US statement came hours after Saeed walked free and lost little time in making yet another incendiary speech, slamming India and renewing his vow to continue the "jehad" for Kashmir's "Independence". Previous administrations handled Pakistan with kid gloves despite compelling evidence of its use of terrorism and terrorist groups to further its policy objective, fearful that Washington did not have sufficient leverage to handle a state that threatens to go rogue when confronted.
