Oxford Circus Tube station: Police respond to incident

No Malaysians were injured in the mass panic and stampede at Oxford Street and the Oxford Circus Underground Station in London on Friday, following false reports of shots being fired.

LONDON (AP) - British police said Friday they were responding to reports of an incident at Oxford Circus subway station, one of London's busiest.

Videos posted on social media showed a rush of people leaving the area around the Oxford Circus tube station.

Armed police rushed to London's emblematic Oxford Street on Black Friday after reports of "shots fired". People unsure of what was going on joined crowds of people running away.

Passengers then "self-evacuated" onto the street, causing a "significant level of panic which resulted in numerous calls from members of the public reporting gunfire", the statement said.

According to the police, no suspect has yet been found. Scotland Yard police officers have reached the spot to take stock of the incident.

Bryce Malcolmson, who works in Soho, said he was in Oxford Circus Tube station when he heard a call over the loudspeaker for a police officer to attend one of the platforms.

The source of the panic remains unclear, but BBC News reporter Chi Chi Izundu claims that an "electrical fault" at the tube station may have been mistaken for the sound of a gunshot.

"We were in the Kingdom of candies and then saw a massive crowd of people running and screaming. If you sought shelter in a building please now leave, and follow the direction of police officers on the ground if you need assistance", the force said on Twitter. People were climbing on top of each other. I'm inside" before adding, "Really not sure what's happened!
