Arsenal make highly-rated 22-year-old their top transfer target

So Wenger will have to continue his search for a replacement if Ozil is to leave, and Leon Goretzka is not looking like a possible target.

Speculation has been rife in recent days that come the opening of the January transfer window, Barcelona will make a swift move to strengthen their squad.

But according to reports in Germany, the Premier League club can forget capturing the Schalke star because he only has his sights set on the Nou Camp.

He said: "We feel that England, because of the amount of money you have with TV rights, young talented players like Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka are moving to England and this is not good for our league but also for the quality of our game".

Goretzka is also running into the last six months of his contract and the 22-year-old will be able to discuss potential moves in the summer, meaning he would leave Schalke for nothing.

In January, Ozil is free to talk to clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement.

But SportBild say Goretzka has already made it clear where his next destination will be - Barcelona.

"The same has happened here but it's my understanding he is not the kind of player they're after".

Arsenal had hoped they could move early to head off competition from their rivals in the race for the midfielder.

It claims that Ozil's representatives have agreed for the 29-year-old to head to the Nou Camp in the New Year, with Arsenal set to receive 20m euros for the Germany worldwide, who would have been available on a free in the summer.
