The Vantage GTE was developed alongside the road auto, and has already undergone around 8000 miles of testing, including a test at Sebring and a 30-hour run at Jarama in Spain. Alex Lynn will also join Aston Martin Racing, and the team promises more driver announcements to follow.

It has a sporty and an athletic design with the muscular curves across the body, pronounced bonnet and sharp chrome lined grille.

It is a bold design and new direction for Aston which could divide fans.

"To conduct the development process of this auto so closely with Aston Martin's design and engineering teams was essential for both road and race vehicle to retain the same underlying DNA".

The prominent front splitter and rear diffuser gives some indication of this car's aerodynamic prowess, with the whole exterior being tuned to manipulate the air.

It is something that has been synonymous with performance since it was introduced and the British vehicle manufacturer is hoping that doesn't change with the new model.

The interior has been created to be sports vehicle focused with sharp lines in place of the usual swooping curves.

Power comes from the same AMG-sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 as the street Vantage, pushing out power close to the 500 hp mark in accordance with the GTE class limitations.

The V8 drives the rear wheels via a rear-mounted eight-speed ZF transmission and is the first Aston Martin to be fitted with an electronic rear differential (E-Diff).

Though the new 2018 Vantage may not be as exciting as the brand's £2.5 million Valkyrie hypercar or quite as newsworthy as the next model from its DB Series, it is undoubtedly more important. Why?

The auto has a surprisingly large boot space of 350 litres, which isn't bad for a two-seater 195mph sports vehicle.

The Vantage badge has been worn by some true icons over its seven decade history, and the outgoing model is the single most successful model Aston Martin has ever sold.

You won't have to wait long: the GTE will make its racing debut in the 2018 World Endurance Car season, driven by Darren Turner, Jonny Adam, Nicki Thiim, Marco Sørensen and others as part of the Aston Martin Racing works outfit.

"Creating a worthy successor has been a challenge to relish and a huge source of motivation".

"I thought, wow, we are already at this level, and we are only doing the shakedown".

Industry observers suggest a V12 version of the auto is likely to launch later, but not a hybrid as Aston Martin's already announced plans to offer electrified versions of all its cars are scheduled from 2025, suggesting the next generation of Vantage will be the first with electric power.
