The fire appears to have engulfed almost the whole building and smoke can be seen high above the blaze. One resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

It is believed that the fire spread to four alarms at the six-storey building.

The building is both residential and retail.

As of 5pm the fire was not under control, according to officials at the scene. He then ran upstairs and went door-to-door to warn his neighbors.

More than 250 firefighters responded to the fire that displaced at families and injured nine people, including seven firefighters, one police officer, and one civilian.

Fire crews were forced to deploy aerial appliances to douse the fire. Other structures across the street from the fire drenched building have been evacuated, while those buildings are also feared to be at risk for collapse.

The cause of the fire wasn't yet determined, but firefighters said fierce winds accelerated the blaze.
