Turkish Republic founder Kemal Ataturk was also named as an "enemy" in the same briefing, prompting apologies from both Norway and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said that Erdogan and Ataturk had both been depicted as an "enemy collaborator" in one of the drills.

Turkey withdrew its 40 soldiers from the exercise after the incident, it added.

Erdoğan said he had personally instructed the immediate withdrawal of the Turkish troops "even if those names are removed" from the chart, according to the Associated Press.

The Turkish president has reacted to the incident that took place during North Atlantic Treaty Organisation drills in Norway, saying, "It's not possible to have this kind of alliance". Initially, a technician used a picture of Ataturk he found online to represent enemy ranks.

The Norwegian official posted anti-alliance comments in the fake account which displayed Erdogan as collaborating with an enemy, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation official said, adding that reports suggest the person has Kurdish origin, but his identity is not clarified yet.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also issued an apology, calling Turkey a valued member of the military alliance.

"The Norwegian national was removed from the exercise by JWC as a effect of the incident".

According to Stoltenberg, a third-party worker, not a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation employee, was responsible for the act of including Erdogan on the list.

"Turkey is an important ally in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, we value our good cooperation".

"I have been informed about offence caused in a recently concluded exercise at NATO's Joint Warfare Center (JWC) in Stavanger, Norway". It is now led by Major General Andrzej Reudowicz of Poland. It has staff of 250 personnel including civilians from 11 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states.

"The message does not reflect Norway's views or policies and I apologize for the content of the message". "Turkey is an important ally in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and we value our good cooperation".
