Katy Perry banned from performing at Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai

The 22-year-old model has announced she will no longer be taking to the runway in Shanghai, China, for the lingerie giant's annual fashion show, and whilst she hasn't given a reason for her cancellation, she has insisted she'll be supporting her fellow models "in spirit".

A source told Page Six that Perry was initially cleared to perform in Shanghai, but Chinese officials changed their minds after learning of a 2015 incident in Taiwan where the singer wore a sunflower dress in support of the country. Though the model gave no explanation for her withdrawal, sources said she was also banned from entering the country over a controversial video from February where she appeared to mock Asians.

In a tweet posted to her Twitter account on Thursday (16.11.17), she wrote: "I'm so bummed I won't be able to make it to China this year".

The show, which will air on CBS on November 28, has also seen an exodus of fashion bloggers because the Chinese government has refused to give them visas, while television producers are struggling to get permission to shoot outside the Mercedes-Benz Arena venue, the New York Post Page Six reported. With the show taking place in Shanghai, commenters called for the model to drop out nearly immediately after news broke that she was joining the 2017 model cast. "May this be a lesson for her. Apologies doesn't erase the actions".

Speculation also has swirled over the participation of Russia's Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova, and Ukraine's Dasha Khlystun, after unconfirmed reports suggested they were denied Chinese visas.

"Victoria's Secret will not have a response", a spokeswoman told the Associated Press by email. Media outlets are alleging that Katy Perry is out as a performer because she was denied access into China after wearing a costume with sunflowers - an anti-China symbol - during a performance in Taiwan. When Hadid was announced as attending the show this summer, she was over-the-moon.

Supermodel Adriana Lima's visa is in limbo due to a "diplomatic problem", according to Page Six.

The 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is right around the corner, but two of the most anticipated invitees won't be there.
