Remainer Tory MPs accused of being 'mutineers'

The MPs were singled out for threatening to rebel against the government's plans to fix the Brexit date into law.

As she faced the House of Commons for her weekly Prime Minister's Questions, May also defended the right of her Conservative party MPs to express their disagreements over the crucial EU Withdrawal Bill, a key part of the United Kingdom government's strategy for leaving the European Union following last year's referendum in favour of Brexit. She told the House: "This is a blatant piece of bullying that goes to the very heart of democracy".

"It's not about frustrating Brexit, it's about getting the best economic deal for this country", he added.

Yesterday's Commons clashes were dominated by pro-EU Tory rebels such as Ken Clarke, who slammed ministers for attempting to give themselves more powers.

"The role of MPs is not to be lobby fodder but to scrutinise legislation", tweeted Antoinette Sandbach, referring to the lobby areas in which lawmakers vote.

Even ardent Brexiteers quickly sought distance from the paper's coverage with Brexit minister Steve Baker stating that "I regret any media attempts to divide our party" and Dominic Raab signalling his agreement.

"My Parliamentary colleagues have honest suggestions to improve the Bill which we are working through and I respect them for that".

It comes as the MPs began the second day of line-by-line scrutiny of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill, which will transfer EU law onto the domestic statute books.

Conservative rebellions are likely later on in the process, with a further six days of discussion set aside over the coming weeks. This problem is about to be brought into sharp focus as the centrepiece of the government's legislative programme for Brexit, the EU Withdrawal Bill, returns to parliament this week.

Britain trigged the two-year Article 50 process of leaving the European Union on March 29 this year, but this can be extended if all 28 European Union member states including Britain agree. "I hope we can all come together to deliver on the decision that the country took that we should leave the European Union".

A total of 464 amendments have been tabled to the bill. "I'll vote with the government but questioning the integrity of these good people is anti-democratic madness". I didn't. My objective is to try to make sure that Brexit is as controlled and risk-free a process as possible.
