Papa Johns apologizes for blaming low sales on national anthem protests

Papa John's Pizza issued an apology Wednesday weeks after CEO John Schnatter caused controversy by linking NFL players kneeling during the singing of the national anthem to declining pizza sales.
"The NFL has hurt us by not resolving the current debacle to the players' and owners' satisfaction", Schnatter said in an earnings call on November 1, via Bloomberg.
The comment sparked a Twitter feud, which quickly became political, between Papa John's and frozen pizza company DiGornio.
So in tweets last evening, the company said Schnatter didn't mean what people thought he meant.
We will work with the players and league to find a positive way forward. "I'm confused, because your CEO definitely blamed the National Football League protests for poor sales and criticized the NFL's leadership for not squelching the protests sooner. Except neo-nazis - (middle finger emoji) those guys".
"There is a way to do both", the company said.
Papa John's added that it is "open to ideas from all".
"We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players' movement to create a new platform for change". We also believe, as Americans, we should honour our anthem.
During an earnings call earlier this month, Papa John's founder John Schnatter said, "The NFL has hurt us by not resolving the current debacle to the players' and owners' satisfaction of all parties this year, year-and-a-half ago". The company's official Twitter account also followed up by responding to feedback, including inquiries regarding why it took so long for a statement to come.
Some NFL critics have said that the league should force players to stand for the anthem.
So, that's certainly more of a "sorry you were offended" apology than a "sorry, we screwed up" apology, which is something.
The NFL couldn't immediately be reached for comment late Tuesday. "It's time we are clear".
