GameStop Delays Unlimited Game Rental Service Before Launch

A GameStop rep since confirmed the news, telling Kotaku, "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests with an exceptional service".

That means any in-store advertisements for PowerPass have been removed and put in storage until further notice.

GameStop hasn't said when it will revive the program. For $60, customers could take home one used game at a time and keep it for up to six months. The retailer confirmed that it had halted the initiative in a statement, citing "a few program limitations we have identified" as the cause.

Originally, GameStop planned to launch the PowerPass subscription on November 19, right in time for the holiday season.

GameStop's entrance into the game-rental market comes amid the company's continued financial difficulties. Along similar lines, Nintendo is set to launch a Netflix-like service for classic retro games on its Switch platform in 2018.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended.

"For those guests who have already purchased the service, we are allowing them to bring the pass and video game they have checked out, back to receive a full refund", our GameStop spokesperson said.

If you were looking forward to becoming one of GameStop's PowerPass subscribers later this month, we have some bad news for you.

While there isn't a specific reason for the hold-up, according to Kotaku via GameStop employees, the company's antiquated POS system wasn't simply equipped to handle it. At the end of the six months, customers would be allowed to keep one of the games they had rented during that timespan. There's no timing yet for the rental program's return, but it doesn't sound like GameStop has any intention of making the temporary hold more permanent.
