Armenian PM extends condolences to First Vice-President of Iran on devastating natural disaster

The country marked a day of mourning for those killed in the 7.3-magnitude quake that struck a mountainous region spanning the Iran-Iraq border late Sunday. Authorities said Iran's armed forces will be sent to help remove rubble.

Iran's sporting community has always been beside the people during natural calamities such as the 2003 Bam quake in Bam City, Kerman Province, in which more than 26,000 were killed and over 30,000 were injured. The quake also shook the Iranian provinces of Kordestan, Ilam, Khuzestan, Markazi, West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Lorestan, Qazvin, Zanjan, Qom and Tehran.

Mr Gulani said he understood aid had been despatched within the province, but that people in his town had not yet received help.

The most extensive damage in Iraq occurred in the town of Darbandikhan in the country's Kurdish region.

A reporter in Iran's Kurdistan Province, hit by a 7.3 magnitude natural disaster on November 12, 2017, told the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) that aid had not reached some of the most devastated villages and towns nearly a full day after the quake had hit.

Under the plan dubbed Mehr, or "kindness" in Farsi, some 2 million units were built in Iran, including hundreds in Sarpol-e Zahab. But Iranian officials said the chances of finding any more survivors were extremely low.

Iran's Red Crescent Society officials announced on Monday evening that the rescue operations in Kermanshah will be completed in a few hours.

Hospitals in nearby provinces took in numerous injured, state television said, airing footage of survivors waiting to be treated.

More than 30,000 houses in the area were damaged and at least two villages were completely destroyed, Iranian authorities said.

Local health minister Rekawt Rasheed said the situation was "critical", made worse by the fact that the district's main hospital was badly damaged and without power.

"The movement of different layers under the earth has muddied the water supply in the city and so we can't provide water until the mud settles", said the governor of Qasr-e Shirin, Faramarz Akbari.

Some of the buildings, which were built by government-affiliated programs and "state-owned schemes", according to a statement from the Office of the President, collapsed or were badly damaged.

Rescuers used backhoes and other heavy equipment to dig through toppled buildings in Sarpol-e-Zahab, home to more than half of the dead. In northern Iraq's Kurdish districts, seven were killed and 325 wounded.
