Nationalists March On Poland's Independence Day

Marchers chanted religious slogans such as "God, honour, country" and some called out racist chants including "Pure Poland, white Poland".

Far-right leaders from elsewhere in Europe - including former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson - were also said to have been at the event, organised to coincide with Poland's independence day.

Many people in the crowd told local and worldwide media they were not part of the radical-nationalist groups, but were attending in celebration of Independence Day. Police estimated some 60,000 people took part in the demonstration that included banners that read, "White Europe, Europe must be white" and, "Pray for an Islamic Holocaust".

While numerous marchers carried the national white-and-red flag, some displayed banners depicting a falanga, a far-right symbol dating to the 1930s. Many were young men, some with their faces covered or with beer bottles in hand, but families and older Poles also participated.

Independence day is taken seriously in Poland, which was wiped off the map for over 120 years prior to 1918.

It attracted far-right agitators from elsewhere in Europe, including Tommy Robinson from the United Kingdom and Roberto Fiore from Italy.

At a 6 p.m. news conference, after the march ended, Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said: "There were no incidents".

Andy Eddles, a British language teacher who has been living in Poland for 27 years, said he was "shocked that they're allowed to demonstrate on this day".

The march also drew about 2,000 counter-protesters, according to BBC, and led to police detaining about 50 people.

'It's 50,000 to 100,000 mostly football hooligans hijacking patriotism, ' the 50-year-old said. Pawel, 21, from the southern city of Rzeszow told AFP it was "important because religion is important in our country and we don't want Islamisation, of Europe or especially Poland".

The Warsaw president, Andrzej Duda, hosted a ceremony with all previous presidents, as well as European Union president Donald Tusk, while the march took place, Guardian reports.

The events that take place on November 11 in Poland have increasingly been characterized in the past years not only by an assertion of Polish national self-determination, but also a rejection of the European Union's globalist mindset.

In Poland the anniversary of the 80th independence Day is celebrated with a special scale.

Tusk's appearance comes at a time when Warsaw has been increasingly at odds with Brussels because of the PiS government's controversial court reforms, large-scale logging in a primeval forest and refusal to welcome migrants.
