Republicans must turn their backs on Roy Moore

The Washington Post reported Thursday that an Alabama woman said Moore had sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney. Another three women also claim Mr. Moore pursued them as teenagers as well.

The Moore campaign issued a statement Thursday calling the allegations "the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation".

Zeigler, asked to respond to Lipinsky's comments today, stressed that he believes the story about Moore is not true and called the story a "hit piece".

But as NPR's Jessica Taylor notes, "The Alabama Republican Party and the Republican National Committee remain fundraising partners with Moore, per the agreement". But national Republicans have mostly said Moore should quit the race, if the allegations are true.

And it was clear that many in his conservative base were in no mood to desert him in a race for a Senate seat Republicans consider crucial to maintaining their majority in the upper chamber. Renato Mariotti, a candidate for IL attorney general, tweeted: "Sean Hannity tries to excuse the sexual assault of a 14-year old girl by Roy Moore by saying it was 'consensual.' Does he have no shame at all?"

Facing a tough re-election, Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., likened Moore to Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, former Rep. Anthony Weiner and former Fox News executive Roger Ailes, all men accused of sexual misconduct.

Take Alabama state auditor Jim Ziegler, for one.

But nationally, GOP leaders were less likely to defend Moore's actions and more likely to say the allegations were disturbing, without necessarily ruling on their veracity. Unusual lost to Moore in the Republican primary runoff. The Senate's GOP leader said if the report is shown to be true, Moore must step aside.

CNN reported that it had spoken with Corfman's stepfather, who said the family "stands by" what was reported in The Post.

Lee's office told The Hill on Friday that the Moore campaign never asked to use the senator's image and that their office had requested that Moore take it down.

Mr. Mowery cited Moore's overwhelming popularity with Alabama's Republican voters, who he said would tend to distrust allegations published in the Post.

He is facing Democrat Doug Jones in a December 12 special election.

The race included personal appearances from President Trump, in support of odd, and former White House strategist Stephen Bannon, backing Moore. In addition, Zeigler said that even if the allegation was true, it did not involve sexual intercourse. Richard Shelby, the dean of the state's congressional delegation, told reporters in Washington that if the charges were accurate "he wouldn't belong in the Senate".

That view was shared by Scott Reed, a political strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who opposed Moore's nomination. A 16 year old said Moore invited her on a date but her mother refused. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who leads the Senate Democratic campaign arm. A handful of senators suggested they would support unusual if he launched a bid, and odd told the Associated Press he would "do some more research" before ruling it out.

Moore was twice removed from his state Supreme Court position, once for disobeying a federal court order to remove a 5,200-pound granite Ten Commandments monument from the lobby of the state judicial building, and later for urging state probate judges to defy the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage.
