Vikings place Sam Bradford on IR to make room for Teddy Bridgewater

Minnesota has officially activated Teddy Bridgewater and placed Sam Bradford on injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford underwent an arthroscopic procedure Tuesday in which Dr. James Andrews "cleaned up" his left knee but found no major damage, according to team sources.

The Vikings, who lead the NFC North at 6-2, chose to shut down Bradford for the rest of the 2017 regular season but if they make the playoffs and the veteran is healthy, the team could elect to activate him off IR. When he returns to the roster, it will be initially as a backup to Case Keenum, who is 4-2 as a starter in relief of Bradford. If the Vikings make the playoffs and Bradford is healthy, the team could elect to activate him off IR at that point.

Bridgewater was placed on the PUP list to start the season, and he returned to practice October 18, the first day he was eligible. He saw Bradford on September 22 and determined then that no additional surgery was needed.

Bradford appeared in one other game in the Vikings' Week 5 win at Chicago, where he had to be removed with 25 seconds remaining in the first half because of pain.

Bridgewater hasn't played since the 2016 preseason, when he dislocated his knee and required surgery.

The Vikings play the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field on Sunday. The Vikings quarterback has come a long way since he suffered a dislocated knee and torn ACL on August 30, 2016.

Bradford came over from the Eagles a year ago in a trade after Bridgewater's injury. His 3,231 passing yards that season earned him an invite to the Pro Bowl.
