A redesigned, High-End iPad with Face ID Coming in 2018

Nov 09, 2017, 00:29

Apple is allegedly working on a few different models, with at least one new model of this high-end new iPad having a screen roughly the size of the current 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

The company's next iPad Pro is expected to ditch its home button in favor if Face ID, much like the iPhone X, according to a new Bloomberg report.

Apple is planning to overhaul its iPad for 2018, slicing away bezels along with the TouchID fingerprint sensor.

Though it supposedly won't feature an OLED panel, this model will have slimmer edges, something made possible in part by removing the home button.

The first tablet to mirror the most recognisable change of the iPhone X could arrive later next year, the sources say.

However, the new Pro tablet is unlikely to boast the OLED display offered by Apple's latest smartphone, those familiar with the matter said. Additionally, the new iPad will come with an upgraded processor, GPU, and Apple Pencil Stylus, which will come with a new set of software-enabled features. (I think I'd value that more than Face ID, personally.) Bloomberg estimates that the launch is about a year out, so we might not see it until fall 2018, and the report warns that Face ID integration could be nixed due to supply issues between now and then. Speaking of screens, this is a potential point of delineation between Apple's next flagship tablet and its new, almost all-screen smartphone: it won't utilize OLED screen technology, but will instead likely stick with a tried-and-true LCD panel.

Tablet sales have taken a 17 percent decline globally over the last three years and Apple certainly felt it.
