US Senator Rand Paul assaulted at his home in Kentucky

Police arrested a man named Rene Albert Boucher, who they allege "intentionally assaulted" Paul, causing him "minor injury", according to the report. All rights reserved. In a statement, Paul spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper said the Republican senator is 'fine'.

Police released few details about the assault or what led to the confrontation between Paul and the 59-year-old suspect arrested in the incident.

State troopers arrived at 3:21 p.m. Friday at the Republican senator's home.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, dropped out of the race for president in February 2016 and successfully ran for re-election as a senator.

Neither Paul's office nor the Kentucky immediately responded to questions about the extent of any injuries Paul may have suffered or the circumstances of the incident.

He is being held at Warren County jail on $5,000 bond, state police said.

"Had the [Capitol police] not been there, it would have been a massacre", Rand Paul said of the Congressional baseball shooting.
