Marseille open investigation into Evra's physical altercation with fan

Evra signed an 18-month deal with Marseille in January, but has failed to perform to expectations.

Marseille's players were warming up before their Europa League match with Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal when Evra was targeted by supporters with unkind chants.

However, the Frenchman faces a far heftier sentence should he be found guilty, an outcome that appears likely due to the clear video evidence against the Marseille man.

Evra walked towards the fans, who reportedly had been hurling abuse at the French full-back before squaring off with them, and aimed a punch at a supporter before he dished out his best Eric Cantona impression.

Marseille confirmed after the game they had opened an investigation into the incident, while UEFA also began disciplinary proceedings against Evra and said that will be suspended for at least one match. He was then ushered away by a team-mate.

Before the match, Evra kicked a fan in the head, doing his best impression of MMA legend Mirko Cro Cop.

"Pat has experience, and he must not react".

"Similarly, the club can only condemn by definition any destructive behaviour by a "pseudo supporter" who insults his own players when everyone must instead support his team". "Patrice is a more than experienced player and we can not respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters".

Cantona spent a couple of seasons at Marseille in the late 80s and early 90s before eventually joining Manchester United, while Evra spent nine seasons at United before eventually joining Marseille.
