Police in Thornton, Colorado have arrested a suspect in Wednesday night's shooting inside a Walmart that resulted in the deaths of two men and a woman.
KCNC-TV said police SWAT team officers had ringed his last known address in suburban Adams County on Thursday morning when Ostrem drove past and was spotted.
Television footage showed Ostrem, with close-cropped hair and wearing a red polo shirt, standing silently and staring down as he was handcuffed.
Copter4 flew over the scene of Ostrem's arrest.
Police had yet to determine a motive for the shooting, which occurred late Wednesday inside the busy Walmart about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Denver in a busy shopping center.
According to police, the lone gunman, Ostrem, walked into the Walmart "nonchalantly" and opened fire randomly on a group of people near the cash registers, according to a spokesperson for the Thornton Police Department. Dozens of shoppers and employees dropped to the ground and rushed to escape as police cruisers and ambulances raced to the scene.
A Walmart customer, Aaron Stephens, 44, of Thornton, told Reuters he was inside paying for groceries at a self-checkout stand when he heard gunshots and the sound of ricocheting bullets.
"You just hear people running right to the exit yelling, 'He's got a gun". Authorities did not immediately release any other information about the victims.
A Walmart employee told her someone was shooting, and then Ms Perez saw people running away yelling: "Let's go".
The Walmart remained closed as of Thursday morning, Thornton Mayor Heidi Williams said.
"This is a very heinous act", he said. The brief chase ensued.
Police took Ostrem into custody after his auto was blocked by traffic at an intersection.
Investigators are working to determine if Ostrem had any connection to the victims. 9Wants to Know has learned he was charged with resisting arrest in 1999, sued by a family member in 2011, was charged with driving under the influence in 2013 and filed for bankruptcy in 2015. Runyon said the company had had no contact with Ostrem since he left.
She said her son was able to get out and he also pulled his friend out through a side entrance. Several times, he swore at people for sitting in the outdoor stairways or leaving laundry in communal machines, she said.
Gerald Burnett, a 63-year-old retiree who lives in a first-floor unit, said he was sitting on the stairs drinking coffee one morning when Ostrem came down the steps. He says Ostrem told him to move and cursed at him.
