Out for the year: Colts will place Luck on injured reserve

The Indianapolis Colts are placing quarterback Andrew Luck on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday.

"I wish I was better and 100 percent this season, but that's not the case", Luck told Colts.com in an interview. "And I think a year of his body healing, getting the shoulder right, I think we will see a better Andrew down the line". While he was able to play through it last season, his first after signing a six-year, $140 million extension, he made a decision to get it fixed last year.

Indianapolis stated there would be no extra surgery for Luck, but just rest and rehab.

Andrew Luck's struggles in recovery have come as a bit of a surprise to a Colts organization that thought he had a good chance to play this season. If they do trade, Colts fans should cross their fingers that it brings a Vontae Davis and not a Trent Richardson. He was considered a once-in-a-generation quarterback prospect, the ideal mixture of pocket passing, athleticism, toughness, temperament and football smarts. I hate to use the word "was", but facts are facts. He would later miss the last seven games of the season due to a lacerated kidney. That's a major concern. Ballard dismissed the idea the shoulder injury could be career threatening.

"I've heard all sorts of rumors about career-ending", Ballard said. I have not gotten that from one doctor.

It sounds much simpler than it is.

"The shoulder is subjective and after a surgery everybody's different, everybody rehabs at a different way". And now Indianapolis is saddled with the uncertainty of not knowing what type of quarterback Luck will be once he does return while also having one of the worst rosters in the NFL. Back-up QB Jacoby Brissett has been starting since Week Two and is expected to do so for the remainder of the year. Brissett does not yet look like the long-term equivalent of a starter.

Inside the locker room, Luck's teammates understand why he won't be back. And you want to come in and play like you're playing in the AFC North? His competitiveness remains intact.

Ballard said, "The consensus from all the doctors is to continue rehab, to be patient and to continue rehab".

The Colts had originally hoped that Luck would be ready for the start of the season, but he was never even able to throw the ball in practice. We know how that ended up.

Six days later, Ballard told reporters Luck needed a cortisone shot for inflammation in the shoulder and that his throwing regimen had been "shut down".

At this point, it's hard to be anything but concerned about Luck's future.
