"Kiddie" fire extinguisher recalled after one death and 16 injuries

Nov 03, 2017, 00:24

Two Kidde fire extinguishers brought in by first responders failed to put out the fire on Rosko's body, leading to the 22-year-old's deth.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers are being recalled.

In addition to the extinguishers not working, the nozzle can come off with enough force to kill you. They were manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017.

Consumers with a recalled extinguisher should contact Kidde.com for a free replacement and for instructions on how to return a recalled extinguisher.

Extinguishers have been sold at several stores including The Home Deport, Walmart and Amazon. Some of them were included in prior recalls in March 2009 and February 2015, while others were sold more recently.

Injuries reported as a result of the malfunction include smoke inhalation and minor burns.

There have been 391 reports of the extinguishers failing, resulting in at least one death in 2014 that involved a vehicle fire following a crash, as well as 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Kidde will replace the devices with new extinguishers made with metal parts. Eastern time, Monday through Friday, or 9 a.m.to 3 p.m., Eastern time, Saturday or Sunday. No proof of purchase is required, however, a model number, year of manufacture, and the unit's date code and serial number must be provided. Additional information may also be requested.

"You're better off to have no fire extinguisher than a defective fire extinguisher", former California chief fire marshal James McMullen told CBS News.
