Why Patriots Trading Jimmy Garoppolo To 49ers 'Shocked' Skip Bayless

147.9 quarterback rating in his regular season debut against the Kansas City Chiefs on " Monday Night Football" completing 6-of-7 passes for 70 yards and his first-career touchdown.

And the high second-round pick the 49ers just gave up for Garoppolo would be an cheap player: One of the reasons those picks are valuable is that a high second-round pick only costs a little more than $1 million against the salary cap. "They're getting a good person, and they're getting a great teammate and they're getting a good quarterback and Jimmy's getting a good coach".

Belichick praised Garoppolo, whom he drafted in the second round in 2014.

Dan Shaughnessy: Well, it's a news-making trade but [the Patriots] are trading a ghost, a potential, a someone that never was. The Patriots coach clearly expected Brady to decline sooner. We probably had in my mind, the best quarterback situation in the league for the last 2.5 years. They had hoped to keep him. I would not count anything out with Malcolm Butler right now - he's gonna test the market next year, no question, but if he doesn't like the offers that are out there, I absolutely could see a scenario where he returns to the Patriots.

Ben Volin: I've been listening all morning to various opinions that the Patriots can now use the tag on Butler and Butler will be "all pissed off and that would really make him mad".

Chris Gasper: I think one of the factors here was [the Patriots] wanted to see a 40-year-old Tom Brady [play]. He's in his four season and has backed up Tom Brady all four seasons. "I'm just not used to being a backup". It's not something I try to do a lot of.

No matter how you slice it though, today was a good day for the Jets as one less QB hungry team will be in the top 10 and the possibility of landing Cousins, should he hit free agency, increased significantly.

So Brady has done what few quarterbacks have been able to pull off - get better with age. Those kind of things doesn't equate in my view. Garoppolo just didn't want to wait that long. I'm not saying there aren't things players can do to improve, but it's more maintenance and maintaining that high level of play.
