Utah librarian spotted man sought in 2 deaths

One person was killed in a shooting at the University of Utah where students were told to shelter in place after a report of shots fired near the campus on Monday, police said.

Brophy says the woman's husband was suspect 24-year-old Austin Boutain.

Brown says police are still investigating how Boutain evaded a manhunt that started after 23-year-old Chinese student ChenWei Guo was found shot to death Monday evening in his vehicle in a canyon near campus.

Austin Boutain, 24, was arrested Tuesday, Salt Lake City police said in a tweet.

Kathleen Boutain, 23, is in custody in the Salt Lake City Jail on unrelated theft and drug charges, jail records show. Police said Guo and Boutain did not know each other. Guo was an global student at the university.

At least eight law enforcement agencies were on scene in Utah, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities now believe Boutain may be also be connected to a murder in Colorado. Campus services are open and counseling services are available, President David W. Pershing said in a statement.

Salt Lake City and U of U campus police learned Tuesday that one or both Boutains are wanted in a homicide investigation near Golden, Colorado.

Brown said on Tuesday afternoon that Colorado authorities would arrive within the hour to investigate for their own homicide case.

Authorities are scouring a canyon in Utah by foot and by air for a man suspected of killing a Chinese global student at the University of Utah.

The university sent an alert at 9 p.m.to students and staff to shelter in place.

Pershing said the university has been in contact with the student's parents.

University officials canceled Tuesday classes. He added that Boutain is "considered armed and risky".

Traffic is blocked off near the area, and Utah Transit Authority trains are not proceeding east of the stadium station at the west side of campus.
