Florida Fires Head Coach Jim McElwain

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Florida is parting ways with coach Jim McElwain a day after a third consecutive loss and almost a week after he said players and families had received death threats.

"No one representing the University of Florida or our athletic department has had any conversations with Coach McElwain or his representatives regarding a buyout of his contract", Stricklin said.

At a press conference Sunday night, Stricklin said he wanted to see the Florida offense become "fun again".

After word broke that Florida fired McElwain on Sunday morning, several Gators expressed dismay, frustration and confusion at not just the news itself, but learning about it on the internet.

Randy Shannon will serve as interim coach throughout the remainder of the season.

The person says the parties are negotiating McElwain's $12.5 million buyout.

Shannon has over 25 years of coaching experience, serving as the head coach for the University of Miami from 2007-10 (28-22).

The meeting comes a day after the Gators lost 42-7 to No. 3 Georgia on Saturday in Jacksonville. If the Gators go that route, McElwain could opt to contest whether UF has grounds to fire him from cause, which could lead to a court battle. It was Florida's third straight loss.

The organization hired McElwain in December 2014.

Nevertheless, McElwain began the week on thin ice in the hypercompetitive SEC, and his claims of death threats reportedly made his situation far more tenuous. He was 122-27-1 at Florida, winning six SEC titles in 12 seasons.
