Dave Martinez Reportedly Named Nationals Manager, Agrees to 3-Year Contract

The two sides hadn't negotiated a finalized contract as of Saturday night, but a source confirmed the finalized deal (which was first reported by The Washington Post) this morning.

Having interviewed for numerous mangerial openings in years past, it seems Martinez has finally landed his first gig as a major-league skipper.

Martinez has served as Joe Maddon's bench coach in Chicago and Tampa Bay (2008-14) for a decade but has never been a manager. Heyman says Martinez will be officially announced as the Nats' new skipper after the conclusion of the World Series.

After falling in five games to the Cubs in the NL Division Series, Washington opted to fire Dusty Baker after two seasons and 192 victories. The Nationals also interviewed former Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell on Friday, though briefly, and while Washington was also granted permission to speak with New York Mets hitting coach Kevin Long, it remains unclear whether they did so or not.

Ross is only 40 years old and can pretty much write his own job description, whether it's eventually taking the leap as a big-league manager, focusing on broadcasting or pursuing more crossover opportunities in the sports/entertainment worlds.

The team made the surprising decision not to retain Baker, prompting criticism from many corners of the baseball community, then set about searching for someone who might be able to lift the franchise over its insurmountable October hump.

But in terms of new voices and different messages, Maddon and his players will already be working with high-profile new coaches Jim Hickey (pitching) and Chili Davis (hitting) and well-regarded third base coach Brian Butterfield. Wade Boggs, a friend and former teammate of Martinez with the Rays, tweeted his congratulations.
