Russian helicopter crashes at sea in Arctic, 8 aboard: Norway

Russian helicopter has crashed into the sea off the Arctic island of Svalbard, Norway, according to the Norway rescue service. He added that there was poor visibility and heavy snowfall in the region.

The Russian helicopter smashed into the sea at 3.30pm local time (2.30pm UK) near the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. It's known for stunning views of snow-covered mountains, fjords and glaciers.

As a result, Russia operates a coal mine in Barentsburg, a community home to several hundred Russian and Ukrainian miners.

Svalbard is governed under a 1920 treaty giving Norway sovereignty, but allowing all nations that sign the treaty to do business there and to exploit its natural resources.

Pyramiden also was a Russian mining settlement, but was largely abandoned in 1998.

"The rescue service in northern Norway is coordinating the rescue operation, details have not been not disclosed", the rescue service said in its Twitter blog.

There were three pilots and five passengers aboard the helicopter, the Russian emergencies services told TASS.

Rescue Service spokesman Tore Hongset told VG that two rescue boats and a helicopter were sent to the scene.

In 2008, another Mil Mi-8 crashed near Barentsburg, killing three of its nine occupants.
