First Lady Melania Trump Donates Inaugural Gown To Smithsonian

"If some people don't want to dress the first lady, that's the beauty of freedom", Pierre told the Washington Post.

Trump did not have a personal relationship with Pierre before asking him to design her inaugural gown.

Recalling the inaugural ball on January 20, Pierre said when the president saw the first lady in the dress for the first time he said, "Whoa, that's really gorgeous".

"This has truly been a wonderful journey - from the extraordinary collaboration to creating the piece, to seeing her wear it on a historic night, and now having it preserved in history forever in such an iconic exhibit - is something I will always cherish", he said. But she added that he "exceeded my expectations". The gown also featured a slit skirt, ruffled accent trim from the neckline to the hem and a claret ribbon around the waist.

'When sitting down with Hervé I had to discuss my vision, I expressed a desire to have modern, sleek, light, unique and unexpected, ' the first lady added. Trump referred to the designer as "a true artist and real professional".

And in July, at a private Eiffel Tower dinner with President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, in Paris, Pierre designed a red, white and blue dress with embellishments on the bodice meant to represent wheat.

Trump shared the story behind the gown, which was designed in just two weeks. The first, in 2009, was a flowing, white, one-shoulder gown with floral appliqué, the second, a bold red gown made of chiffon and velvet.

Pierre, who also was at the ceremony, said it was an honor to work with her on the dress.

Trump, who officially moved to Washington in June, has been growing more comfortable in her first lady role of late, making a solo trip to Canada to cheer Americans participating in an athletic competition for wounded service members and veterans and visiting a West Virginia care centre for babies born dependent on opioids.
