Facebook Buys an App for their Advocacy for Teens to 'Be Nice'

Oct 18, 2017, 00:30

Facebook has acquired the app TBH for an undisclosed amount, the latter confirmed.

For now, the tbh app is not expected to change under Facebook's ownership. The app has notched up to a whopping 5 million downloads and 2.5 million daily effective users over the past nine weeks with its app.

The tbh app is available only in 13 U.S. states at the moment, including Alaska and Hawaii. This suggests that tbh's widely recognized name and distinctive style persuaded Facebook that it would be better off buying tbh than trying to clone its functionality - something that Facebook's coders could easily do in a very short space of time. As for what tbh does, it's basically a polling app filled with good-natured multiple-choice questions.

The app, an acronym for "To be Honest", allows users to anonymously answer multiple choice questions about friends, who then receive the poll results as compliments. For any further need, you can take notes.

Anyone older than 13 can use the app, but TBH targets teens and their social networks, asking first-time users to select their high school grade and to identify their school or college.

On its acquisition, tbh said, "We were compelled by the ways they could help us realize tbh's vision and bring it to more people".

According to TechCrunch's sources, Facebook paid less than United States dollars 100 million for the company.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Facebook said: "tbh and Facebook share a common goal - of building community and enabling people to share in ways that bring us closer together".

Meanwhile, Facebook would not provide any more details about the deal, but the firm is clearly eager to snap up the next big thing in its infancy, save it become another competitor like Snapchat. According to a release on the app's site, the company believes that after expanding communication, the internet's "next milestone will be around meeting people's emotional needs".
