Arsene Wenger wrongly celebrates George Weah's Liberia election win

Former soccer star George Weah took an early lead in Liberia's poll, putting him ahead of his main rival, vice president Joseph Boakai.

The Liberty Party, whose candidate Charles Brumskine was considered a front-runner to take over from Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said it would consider taking legal action if the National Elections Commission (NEC) did not act on its demands.

Arsene Wenger was one of the first people to congratulate George Weah on becoming the new president of Liberia.

Candidates need to gain more than 50% of votes to win the election. He now leads the first-round of voting with nearly 40 per cent of the vote, though if he does not achieve absolute majority, he will have to enter a run-off against the second place candidate.

At a media briefing in the capital Monrovia late on Thursday, the National Electoral Commission released provisional results at less than 30% (28.75%) of the total number of votes counted.

The final results will be announced on 25 October.

"I would like to congratulate one of my former players, who became president of Liberia", he said. So well done, Georgie.

However, the global observers such as the European Union and the USA based Carter Center and National Democratic Institute (NDI) refuted the allegations by concluding that they had not seen any major problems at the polls on Tuesday.

The Liberty Party, however, wants election authorities to stop counting the votes, citing voting irregularities and fraud.

The country, which gained independence in 1847, had its last democratic transfer of power in 1944, when William Tubman was elected.

Sirleaf is leaving office after completing a two-term mandate of 12 years.

He failed in his two previous attempts to become president.

"We believe that all Liberians are ready for this process".

Korkoya said as at the time of Friday's briefing, results from 1,817 polling places had been processed out of the 5,390 polling places in the country.
