USA bombers fly over Korean peninsula

A U.S. Pacific Air Forces statement described the mission as "the first time U.S. Pacific Command B-1B Lancers have conducted combined training with JASDF and ROKAF fighters at night".

The four aircraft then flew across the peninsula and staged another round of a firing exercise over the Yellow Sea before the two B-IBs returned home, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The two bombers flew to the Sea of Japan from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam.

"This drill was part of a routine deployment training aimed at enhancing deterrence" against the North's nuclear threats, the JCS said in a statement.

Late last month, the USA flew B-1Bs over global waters close to the North's east coast.

The exercises came hours after a South Korean lawmaker claimed North Korean hackers had stolen a large cache of military documents from his country, "including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, and wartime contingency plans drawn up by the United States and South Korea", reports the BBC.

The B-1Bs also conducted exercises with Japan's Air Force in what the USA statement called a "sequenced bilateral mission".

A Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Robert Manning, said he was aware of the report, but declined to confirm or deny any aspect of it."I can assure you that we are confident in the security of our operations plans and our ability to deal with any threat from North Korea", Manning said."I am not going to address whether or not that [hack] has occurred".

" "Continuous Bomber Presence" missions ensure the US, along with key allies, have a credible capability to respond to a variety of levels and types of threats throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region", the Air Force statement said. In a speech at the United Nations in September, the US President accused the North Korean leader Kim of being "on a suicide mission" - while Kim responded by vowing to "tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire".

Rep Lee Cheol-hee, a lawmaker for the ruling Democratic Party who sits on the National Defence Committee, cited unidentified defence officials as saying the hackers stole the US-South Korean war plans a year ago, according to news reports on Tuesday.
