Oculus Go VR Unveiled for $200

San Francisco: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new virtual reality headset (VR) called "Oculus Go" VR headset at a starting price of $199.

While he works closely with the Rift team, he's also keenly aware of VR's evolution over the last five years as he's part of a small group of Oculus executives who helped create an enormous rush of interest in VR when they sold their startup to Facebook in 2014 for roughly $3 billion.

More news about the upcoming Oculus Go headset will be released in the months leading up to the release. The other reason is that the new VR headset will work independently without requiring external connections. Putting VR technology in the hands of more businesses is a crucial step to growing the market, and Oculus wants to make the process easier with Oculus for Business.

"The strategy for Facebook is to make the onboarding to VR as easy and low-priced as possible", said Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

Zuckerburg did confirm a $199 USA price tag however, leading us to believe that the standalone VR headset will cost £199 in the UK.

The Oculus Go will straddle the market between the Rift and the Samsung Gear, a $129 headset that runs on some of Samsung's higher-priced phones.

The concept of virtual reality has been explored by a lot of brands.

Together, Oculus described Oculus Go and the controllers as "two significant milestones". "We're going to double-down on that potential".

Premium offers for Microsoft's new VR platform now runs as much as $500 for higher-end models like the Samsung Odyssey, which is due to come out on November 6.

But, what else does Oculus Go offer that its fully fleshed out sibling does not? In fact, he suggested that developers start by "sprucing up some Gear VR-level things", not bringing Rift games over.

It's also a worthy competitor to those cheap VR headsets under Microsoft's new "Mixed Reality" umbrella. The built in audio driver also means no need for a separate set of headphones.

"It's not about escaping reality, it's about making it better", he said. "Opening up more of those experiences to more of us - that's not isolating, that's freeing".
