Meanwhile, stars across Hollywood have continued to condemn Weinstein's behaviour.

The Weinstein Company board has sacked him, and his wife Georgina Chapman told celebrity magazine People she was leaving Weinstein, with whom she has two children.

"I feel very bad for Harvey Weinstein right now", Lohan told her followers from a hotel in Dubai, according to The Independent.

NY detectives already investigated Weinstein once, in 2015, when an Italian model said the studio executive grabbed her breasts and groped her. Detectives set up a sting where they recorded a conversation between the woman and Weinstein while he tried to persuade her to come into his hotel room.

Actress Asia Argento and a former aspiring actress named Lucia Stoller say Weinstein forced himself on them sexually.

Meryl Streep and Dame Judi Dench join the list of people reacting to the accusations, with George Clooney saying the alleged behaviour is "indefensible". A third woman withholds her name from the article, the result of a 10-month investigation by the magazine.

The embattled mega-producer is facing fallout from bombshell stories published in the last week in which models, actresses and other women who worked in the entertainment industry accused him of serial sexual harassment, including rape.

NY police investigated him in 2015 when a 22-year-old Italian actress and model reported he had groped her, and she was sent into a meeting with him wearing a wire that picked up the now-infamous snippet of conversation from a hotel hallway.

"Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances".

The scandal has rocked Hollywood, with the list of the Oscar-winner's harassment victims also reportedly now including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rosanna Arquette and French actress Judith Godreche.

Other figures to speak out against Weinstein include Barack Obama, Benedict Cumberbatch and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have suspended Harvey Weinstein's membership, effective immediately.

A number of senior Labour MPs call for Weinstein's honorary CBE to be taken away.

A statement from the Cannes Film Festival says organisers are "dismayed" to learn of the allegations about Weinstein.

Earlier in the day, LAPD were called to his daughter's home when, according to TMZ, she was concerned about her father's well-being.

"Based on information referenced in published news reports the NYPD is conducting a review to determine if there are any additional complaints relating to the Harvey Weinstein matter", J. Peter Donald, of the NYPD's DCPI told the outlet. Weinstein was not there when officers arrived.

The Academy called the allegations against Weinstein "repugnant, abhorrent, and antithetical to the high standards of the Academy and the creative community it represents", in a statement released Wednesday.

Weinstein has denied any nonconsensual sexual conduct with any women.
