US Navy destroyer sails near disputed islands in South China Sea

Vietnam, China, and Taiwan all have overlapping claims in Paracel Islands.

The guided-missile Type 054A frigate 'Huangshan, ' two J-11B fighter jets and one Z-8 helicopter were sent to identify the U.S. vessel and make it leave the waters.

China's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that a warship, two fighter jets and a helicopter had scrambled to warn the US ship away, adding it had infringed upon China's sovereignty and security with its "provocation".

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Wednesday denounced the mission as unsafe and a violation of China's sovereignty.

The Chinese Defense Ministry denounced the operation as a "provocation" and said it was "firmly opposed to such flaunting of force and promotion of militarization in the region by the U.S., which could easily trigger accidents at sea and in the air".

China sent a guided-missile frigate, two fighter jets and a helicopter to warn off the USS "Chafee" near disputed islands in the South China Sea, accusing the USA of damaging the country's sovereignty and security interests in the region.

"China will continue to take resolute measures to protect Chinese sovereign territory and maritime interests".

This comes after US President Donald Trump's requested China's cooperation in addressing North Korea's missile and nuclear programs during his UN speech during the General Assembly of the United Nations in September.

A United States Navy destroyer sailed close to islands being claimed by China in South China Sea on Tuesday, Reuters said in an exclusive report quoting three U.S. government officials. The trip will include a stop in China, which Trump has been pressuring to do more to rein in North Korea.

The United States does not recognize China's sovereignty claim over the islands and sees it as an effort to limit freedom of navigation.

The destroyer, however, did not violate the 12-nautical-mile territorial limits of the islands, according to a Reuters report, citing U.S. military officials.
