Trump to visit United Kingdom in early 2018

It is thought he could still make a full State visit - an honour usually reserved for a President's second term - at some stage.

The report said a future state visit had not been ruled out, but no date had been set.

The White House denied that report and May's Downing Street office said plans for the state visit had not changed.

When diplomats are visiting as part of a state visit, they typically stay at Buckingham Palace.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May invited Trump to come for a state visit shortly after he took office in January.

Commons speaker John Bercow later said the president should not be allowed to address the House of Commons during any visit.

Trump has already visited a number of other nations as president, including Paris where he endured an awkward handshake with Emmanuel Macron and the Vatican, where he met Pope Francis.

What we know is that Trump's visit won't have the usual pomp and circumstance associated with state visits, and won't be a guest of the Queen.

Thousands of people launched protests against the move, while more than a million people signed a petition to stop the trip from going ahead.

Mrs May invited the President for a state visit days after he took office in a bid to build closer relations with the USA in the aftermath of Brexit.

Over the summer The Guardian reported that Trump told May in a phone call he wanted to put the trip on hold until the British public supported it. "The Queen extended an invitation to President Trump to visit the United Kingdom and there is no change to those plans". This was still the position on Wednesday.

The spokesman said: 'We have extended an invitation that has been accepted.
