Las Vegas gunman shot security guard before firing on concertgoers

Fifty-eight people died and almost 500 were injured when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor country music festival-an act that investigators are still at a loss to explain-before taking his own life.

Jesus Campos, a guard at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, was investigating an open door alarm on the 32nd floor of the hotel when he encountered the gunman at 9:59 p.m. local time (12:59 a.m. ET). He opened fire through the door, wounding the guard, leading Campos to alert the police.

Timeline events changes as investigation into mass shooting continues.

Mr Lombardo said new information had emerged during the investigation and that "some things were bound to change" given its complicated nature.

Stephen Paddock shot a security guard before opening fire on concertgoers in Las Vegas last weekend, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said.

As bullets began flying into a crowd of country music fans, a pack of 300-plus people ran about a mile to the Las Vegas airport, where they kicked down chain-link fences, hobbled over razor wire and were briefly mistaken by security officials for being attackers instead of shooting victims. "So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there". That was when Paddock fired hundreds of rounds at the guard and a maintenance man, McMahill said.

By the time police arrived at the scene Paddock had killed himself, and his body was found surrounded by an arsenal of weapons and stockpiles of ammunition.

It draws into question the timeline of events and the speed of the police response.

However, Lombardo said that investigators believe that Paddock was "not occupying the room between those days".

Lombardo said that he believed Paddock was planning an escape route and was going to shoot at fuel tanks below to cause a distraction.

Lombardo said Paddock was drilling a wall near a doorway but didn't finish.

"In coordination with the FBI's behavioural analysis unit, a comprehensive picture is being drawn as to the suspect's mental state and now we do not believe there is one particular event in the suspect's life for us to key on", he said.

Campos was not only injured, Lombardo said, "but also extremely shaken up by what happened to him".

The FBI says it has processed the objects and belongings left behind the night of the shooting.

"It's hard to get back to regular life, so we wanted to make sure that that was available for you when you came in", Steinbeck said.

Thomas Fadden, who survived what was the deadliest shooting in recent USA history, said it was scary "not to know who your neighbor could be".
