Charlottesville magistrate issues warrant for black victim of parking garage beating

An arrest warrant has been issued for Deandre Harris, the 20-year-old African American man who was brutally attacked at the white supremacist rally that took place in Charlottesville, VA on August 12.

On today's date, a warrant was issued for Deandre Shakur Harris (B/M; 20 years of age; resident of Suffolk, Virginia) in relation to an assault that occurred on August 12th in the area of the East Market Street parking garage.

Lt. Stephen Upman says the alleged victim told the magistrate's office, a judicial office, what happened.

Zach Roberts, for Truthout, spoke with Lee Merritt, Harris's attorney and a legal specialist on police brutality and corruption.

Once Harris is arrested and taken in to custody an update to this media release will be sent out.

In one of the many fights that broke out, videos and photo tweets posted by journalists showed white supremacist marchers beating Harris with signs and poles.

After news broke of the arrest warrant against Harris on Monday, white nationalists openly celebrated on Twitter.

"We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him", Merritt told The Washington Post.

Charlottesville police have charged two of Harris's attackers, but only after a national campaign demanded they do so. The warrant against Harris stems from accusations that he attacked someone, which led to the beating inside the garage.

According to Intercept writer Shaun King, Harris' accuser was an alleged white supremacist who'd been arrested in the scuffle.

The attorney, who insists Harris did not start the fight, told the Post that Harris plans to turn himself in the coming days. Harris suffered a concussion and a head laceration that required 10 staples.

Ramos and Borden are due back in Charlottesville General District Court on Thursday, as is Richard Wilson Preston, a Baltimore Ku Klux Klan leader who is accused of firing a gun during the rally.
