'Blade Runner 2049' fades to $31.5 million opening weekend

A film like Blade Runner 2049 opening to around $30 million at the domestic box office doesn't sound totally mad or unreasonable on the surface of things, but when taking into account the films astronomical budget ($150 million) that is a figure that doesn't quite cut it. "Alcon and Denis made an wonderful movie".

Blade Runner 2049 received rave reviews from critics with Flickreel even awarding it a five star rating.

Blade Runner 2049 has made far less than expected on its opening weekend at the USA box office.

It did not have a great, explosive spurt from the starting line - garnering only US$31.5 million (S$43 million) on the opening weekend in North America.

What's worth bearing in mind is that the original Blade Runner actually didn't do well at all at the box office, making a paltry $28 million in the US.

Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution President Jeff Goldstein said "Blade Runner 2049" had fallen short of expectations in mid-sized and smaller markets along with the South and Midwest, where the running time and Major League Baseball play-offs appeared to have held down attendance.

"We did well in the major and high-profile markets", he said. I personally prefer his more alive and loose-limbed L.A. detective from "The Nice Guys", but Gosling's nature plays into the movie.

Based on the Charles Martin novel, the film - which has had mixed reviews - stars Elba as a surgeon and Winslet as a journalist who are left stranded together following a plane crash. Like CoF, Blade Runner is often remembered for its electronic soundtrack, which perfectly draws the viewer further into the dystopian world created by director Ridley Scott.

Coming in at number 2 is The Mountain Between Us starring Kate Winslet and Idris Alba with a US weekend gross of $10 million.

The Chinese comedy Never Say Die took $66m globally to top the worldwide box office, pushing Kingsman: The Golden Circle into second place.
