Immigration demands linked to support for DACA

The Trump administration on Sunday announced it's seeking several major changes to the country's immigration system - in exchange for extending the Obama-era program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

Before the election, Trump vowed to scrap protections for Dreamers, only to say after the election that the young immigrants can "rest easy".

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for his part, urged Democrats to exercise "extreme caution" as they hammered out the details of the agreement, and warned that Trump would put in place a "cyber wall".

US President Donald Trump is asking for funding for the wall, speedier deportations and the hiring of thousands of new immigration officials. Two days after ending DACA, Trump told Dreamers that they have nothing to worry about. Their work permits are expected to start expiring in March. Those measures include provisions to make it harder for unaccompanied minors to enter the country illegally, money for the President's border wall and cuts to legal immigration, the CNN reported.

The list, which also includes proposals to dramatically increase the number of immigration enforcement officials was issued unexpectedly in the middle of a long weekend. "This plan will work", Sessions said in a statement.

A few days later, Democratic leaders emerged from a meeting at the White House and said that wouldn't be necessary, as Trump had just agreed to extend DACA. "But the wall will happen". The documents were viewed by The Wall Street Journal ahead of a White House call in which the principles are expected to be outlined.

Schumer and Pelosi said in a statement.

President Donald Trump meets with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other Congressional leaders in the Oval Office of the White House, on September 6, 2017, in Washington. This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise.

Speaking about the list, Marc Short, Legislative Director at the White House, said that these are absolutely unavoidable if the administration is to take a reasonable stance about the economic and legal repercussions of giving any status to these immigrants. In order to protect the status of the Dreamers, they want a few things from Congress. And it's not clear that all, or even most, Republicans back what Trump is proposing on immigration.

In exchange, Trump would back legislation for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which would give legal immigrant status to Dreamers, the approximately 800,000 undocumented immigrants in DACA now residing in the country.

In his letter to Congress, Trump said the list of proposals was developed from the bottom up, working with law enforcement professionals on the front lines of America's immigration system. The system is now voluntary.

These recommendations happen to also align nicely with Trump's campaign rhetoric. But that relief was short-lived - administration officials pushed back nearly immediately, arguing that no such deal had been made.

During the hearing, Dougherty said the administration's immigration priorities include border control, better vetting, reducing visa overstays, reforming non-immigrant business visas and establishing a merit-based system that favors skilled immigrants.
