Marouane Fellaini may have suffered knee ligament damage

Fellaini has been with Belgium during the worldwide break but had to leave the field after 29 minutes of the World Cup qualifier with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Scan on left knee injury (MCL sprain). "We fear that there's ligament damage", Martinez said post match.

United are now second in the table, behind neighbours Manchester City on goal difference, and seven points ahead of Liverpool.

Belgium's official national team account has published a tweet which says Fellaini will be out for a "couple of weeks", and won't be in contention for the global against Cyprus.

"We are all anxious about Fellaini", Martinez told reporters.

"We fear that there's ligament damage."

An official from the Royal Belgian Football Association added: "It is something to be anxious about on first sight".

The news will come as a great concern back at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho's side already short on numbers in the midfield department. Though often derided, Fellaini has experienced a bit of a resurgence in recent times, having scored four goals for his club this season.

However, the injury does mean Fellaini will miss United's Premier League trip to rivals Liverpool on Saturday.

He's also likely to miss the Champions League match away at Benfia, a Premier League game at Huddersfield, and the League Cup tie with Swansea. The United manager is already without the injured Paul Pogba, and he will wonder why Fellaini was risked in the game when Belgium have already secured their place at the World Cup.
