Jolyon Palmer looks to new horizons after Formula One exit

The under-performing Briton is being replaced by Spaniard Carlos Sainz for the remaining four races of the season and left the Japanese Grand Prix with no more points than the eight he arrived with.

Sainz Jr has secured 48 points this year for Toro Rosso but he is now eager to improve Renault's fortunes.

He described it as a "sad way to end" his tenure at Toro Rosso and said it was a result of taking a risk to try and make up ground early in the race.

"The Japanese Grand Prix will be my last race for Renault".

"Tomorrow's Japanese GP will be my last race for Renault", Palmer wrote on Instagram.

"When I'm heading back on the plane maybe it will sink in that I'm not driving for Renault again and maybe not in Formula 1 again".

Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost thanked Sainz for his three years at the Red Bull junior team and quipped: "We look forward to beating him on track!" "He has shown great personal qualities and we wish him all the best in his future career".

"More specifically, I really want to thank all my engineers and mechanics for their support and tremendous work throughout these years".

The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver, who crashed during Friday morning's free practice session, finished fifteenth fastest, thanks to using the same set of tyres in the second session that he did in the opening segment, with the decision made to save tyres in order to open up the strategy calls on Sunday. Heavy rain saw the start delayed and the teams working on their pit lane river rafts rather than the cars.

Neir Renault nor Carlos Sainz wanted to wait any longer.

And he has failed to out-qualify team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, the German making it 14-0 in qualifying on Saturday.

"Toro Rosso is made up of a fantastic group of people and I wish them only the best for the future".

All of those were scored in one race, in Singapore where he was sixth out of just 12 finishers, leaving 15 other complete blanks. This would also seem to confirm Gasly for the remainder of the 2017 season with Toro Rosso.
