Controversy: Dove Soap Apologizes For 'Racist' Ad, Twitter Explodes

Dove, the Unilever personal care brand, ran a campaign recently on Facebook.

Dove has been forced to apologise after releasing a series of images appearing to show a black woman turning white in a Facebook advert accused of being "racist".

The ad has since been deleted.

In a four-paneled image posted on Twitter, Dove thought it was clever to post a picture of a Black woman removing her shirt and becoming a white woman.

It then shows the second woman removing her shirt to show a third woman with a shirt of a third color.

Makeup artist Naomi Leann Blake shared images from the ad on Facebook in a post that soon went viral.

The brand's apology has been met mostly with derision since it was issued Saturday, including threats of boycotts and questions about how the ad could have been approved in the first place.

Just last spring, a British marketing campaign featuring different shaped bottles meant to represent women's different body types also caught flak.

"Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it", wrote Facebook user Megan Blair. Instead, the message says, "We deeply regret the offense it caused".

"Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity". What were you going for, exactly?

"Dear dove, I assure you us "women of colour" have actual skin with colour, not a tan that you can remove. Your creative director should be fired", Angela Reinders wrote on Facebook.

The woman in front of the "before" section had a darker skin tone, the woman in the middle was slightly lighter and the woman in front of the "after" sign was white.

On Sunday, The Guardian published another statement from Dove regarding the controversy over its latest ad. In 2011, the brand's before-and-after advert charted the transition of a black woman to a white woman after using its body wash.
