Auto collides near Exhibition road in London, one person detained

Police officers stand in the road outside London's Natural History Museum, after a vehicle mounted the pavement, injuring a number of pedestrians, .

Metropolitan Police said they would release more information throughout the day.

One person has been detained by the police.

Most of those hurt were treated for leg and head injuries.

Britain is on its second highest security alert level, meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely.

A BBC reporter who was leaving the Natural History Museum as the incident occurred said that she saw a auto diagonally come across the road looking like it was going into one of the boulders on the side of the road.

Downing Street confirmed Theresa May was being kept updated about the incident - which saw multiple Tube stations shut as police investigated.

Witnesses described a rush to leave the scene, nearby shops were evacuated and the sprawling museum, a favorite site for families with children, closed down early.

We attended an incident at Cromwell Road, South Kensington this afternoon.

Reports suggest theblack Toyota Prius which mounted the pavement was a licensed taxi cab.

Witnesses said a blood-soaked man was pinned to the ground and was "laughing" as he was detained.

In a statement police said a number of pedestrians were believed to have been injured in the incident on Exhibition Road. He says "It was quite scary".

The incident occurred on Exhibition Road, just off the Cromwell Road which is where the main entrance to the Natural History Museum lies.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, also issued a statement and urged people to avoid going to the area as the probe into the incident were still underway. Police are dealing with the incident'.

The Natural History Museum - the fourth most popular tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, according to industry figures - tweeted after the incident that it was still open for visitors.
