Rock Legend Tom Petty Dies at Age 66

TMZ cited law enforcement sources as saying Petty had been rushed to a Southern California hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu on Sunday.

Celebrity news site TMZ and network CBS had earlier reported that he had already died, triggering an outraged denial from Petty's daughter. Petty died at 8:40PM PT, "surrounded, by family, his bandmates and friends", the statement says.

Tom Petty best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has died aged 66.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office has released a statement on behalf of Sheriff Sadie Darnell, who is a relative of Tom Petty.

Petty's glory days were in the 1970s, but he also had a successful solo career.

Petty told Rolling Stone magazine he thought it would be the band's last tour together. "He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I'll never forget him".

There has since been an outpouring of emotion on social media as Rock n Roll Hall of Fame member Petty's fans pay tribute to his talents. He included favorites like "Breakdown", "Free Fallin'", "Learning to Fly", and "Refugee" before wrapping up with "You Wreck Me" and "American Girl".

In a 2006 interview, Petty said he first knew he wanted to be in a band when he saw The Beatles performing on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Petty, a few days ago, his Twitter account said, "Thanks to everyone who's supported us for last 40 years, we wouldn't be without you". "I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can".

He also co-founded the Traveling Wilburys - a supergroup with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. But this was the thing that made me want to play music. Bizarrely, despite all their success, The Heartbreakers last album "Hypnotic Eye" (2014) would be their first U.S. number one album. With a little kid, that's a lot of time, ' he said.
