NASA astronauts start spacewalk

Two Nasa astronauts wrapped up a successful spacewalk on Thursday (Oct 5) to fix the International Space Station's (ISS') ageing robotic arm, the USA space agency said. "Congratulations, my friend, on becoming the 221st human to exit in your own personal spacecraft into the void of space". "We're actually very pleased that both LEEs lasted this long", he said. Nespoli will position the LEE between the two spacewalkers as they dangle from foot restraints on the space station's truss.

For identification, Bresnik, call sign EV-1, is using helmet camera 18 and wearing a suit with red stripes. The Canadarm2 has started experiencing some wear and tear. "It's been manifesting itself partly as increased motor currents in the mechanisms on board, and particularly the latches".

The duo have been tasked to replace the arm. Initially, NASA planned to fix the LEE which seemed most degraded, but the other one stopped working, which moved it to the top of the priority list.

The problem did not impact ISS operations, but the arm's hand, or Latching End Effector (LEE), needs fix. Bresnik launched to the space station on July 28 and is expected to return to Earth in December. "The life of the components, we used a 10-year figure". Components of the LEEs were created to last 10 to 15 years, and it's been 16 years since they were installed.

Today's spacewalk marks the third of Bresnik's career and the first for Vande Hei.

Bresnik and Vande Hei are working to replace one of the two Latching End Effectors on Canadarm2, the space station's robotic arm.

The next two spacewalks, on October 10 and October 18, will focus on lubricating the joints in the new LEE using a device called a ballscrew lubrication tool, or BLT.
