Sony Adds HDR Pass-Through to New PlayStation VR Model

The new PlayStation VR headset will be released on October 14 in Japan, but the date for North America is yet to be announced. This new headset uses different connectors. The previous PS VR's model number is CUH-ZVR1, and the new PS VR's model number is CUH-ZVR2.

Rather than an overhaul of the platform, this seems to be a small, incremental upgrade that will bring a new design that includes integrated stereo headphones and a brand new model number. If you're wondering what's worth playing on Sony's VR headset, check out our roundup of the best PlayStation VR games.

Sony hasn't revealed full details of the upcoming VR headset but has said that in order to differentiate between the two models, it'll ship with updated retail packaging. Unlike the old PSVR which debuted a year ago, the new design does not require users to disconnect in order to view HDR content.

It's a welcome change, given the fact that Sony has not made any changes since the first ever VR headset was launched. The new model, sporting model number CUH-ZVR2, won't be a top-to-bottom revamp of the PlayStation VR.

The machine also comes with a "slimmer, streamlined" connection cable, no doubt useful when it has to drape down your back. This PSVR refresh ships with a new processor unit that allows for HDR pass through, which means that now you'll only need to make sure the PSVR is turned off. The unit will come in a bundle with the PlayStation Camera and it will cost ¥44,980, which translates into around $400. With the new processor unit, they'll only have to turn off the headset to do the same. All PSVR games will be compatible with both models.

While Sony is launching their second PSVR device, Microsoft is getting ready to launch their own raft of 3rd party Windows Mixed Reality headsets, for around the same price as the PSVR, but to the larger market of PC gamers. Regardless of when they arrive, however, all bundle pricing will remain the same, Sony's confirmed.
