Pakistan v Sri Lanka, 1st Test - Who Said What

With the ball taking spin on a hard Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch, Pakistani batsmen struggled against veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath (2-19) and off-spinner Dilruwan Perera (2-25).

Sri Lanka resumed at 69-4 and lost its last six wickets for the addition of 69 runs on the last morning to be bowled out for 138, setting Pakistan a target of 136 for victory. Only Haris Sohail showed some resistance and when he was batting with captain Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan believed, but then Herath stepped up and got rid of Sarfraz to send the Pakistan innings hurtling towards a frenetic end.

"Player of the Match, Rangana Herath said:" I have no idea (why he takes wickets against Pakistan). The left-armer is the first bowler in Test history to take 100 wickets in Tests against Pakistan. Bowlers, on the other hand, got enough help from cracks on the pitch to scalp some 16 wickets. The five-for he took in Pakistan's first innings was his seventh against the team. We were surprised, but we thought before play started today that 160-plus would be a winning total.

Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas (3-75) and leg-spinner Yasir Shah (3-120) sported the best figures for Pakistan.

Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera lead the bowling attack for the Sri Lankan side. He failed miserably in the previous Test series against India, which was also his maiden series as captain, scoring only 96 runs in two Test matches at an average of 24.

Herath also etched his name in the record books as he became the first left-arm spinner and second Sri Lankan spinner after Muttiah Muralitharan to take 400 Test wickets. Credit goes to people like Dickwella and Karunaratne.

The second Test - a day-night match - starts in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Friday. "But obviously on the last day he was always going to be a factor and you have got to give him more respect but I would probably have liked to see our batsmen take him on". Conditions are great for batting so, hopefully, we can build a few big partnerships and look to get a first innings lead.

"Asad Shafique is a very good batsman and I think he should have scored a century", said Arthur. All credit should go to the people behind me, from my parents to the team and the supporting staff.

Batsmen needed to spend time in the middle to score but nearly all of them lacked intent and hunger to do so.

For the home side to clinch the Test, they perhaps need Sarfraz to play a substantial knock.
