Matt Cain dominates in final career start

Cain's decorated 13-year career came to an end and the home crowd at AT&T Park saluted the right-hander, a cornerstone of the team's championship era who pitched the only flawless game in franchise history. Giants' skipper Bruce Bochy approached the mound, incurring a stream of boos from the crowd, but ultimately made a decision to leave the rest of the inning to his starter.

What happened Sunday? The Giants won, thanks to Pablo Sandoval's walk-off home run against the Padres in Game 162 (SF 5, SD 4). Szczur is 1 for 4 with one RBI against him.

Cain, who announced his retirement on Wednesday, left Saturday's game with a 1-0 lead over the Padres after five innings of two-hit ball.

He allowed one run and five hits in those six innings, walking two and striking out six. It was his fifth homer in 47 games since returning to San Francisco this summer.

Giants fans responded with a standing ovation, one upon which the Padres joined.

After pinch-hitter Orlando Calixte sacrificed Jones to second, he coasted in on Pence's ground single into center field.

The Padres will finish out the string this weekend by visiting the last-place San Francisco Giants with a three-game set that begins Friday.

Unlike the Tigers, who have already fired manager Brad Ausmus and had Andrew Romine play all nine positions in their Saturday win, the Giants were determined to fight until the end.

Buddy Baumann (2-1), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, got the win. Cain will turn 33 Sunday. San Francisco is 5-1 in Cueto's last 6 starts against San Diego. Ted Barrett, who was behind the plate for Cain's flawless game on June 13, 2012, also called the balls and strikes Saturday.
