London underground fire blamed on cellphone battery

The explosion occurred on the Tower Hill station's District Line, a report on Geo TV says.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said the blaze was not suspicious and was believed to "have been caused by a mobile phone charger overheating". The train was inbound from east London to Ealing Broadway. According to reports, the charger became overheated, resulting into minor explosion and flames.

Less than two weeks after a terror attack in London's underground metro injured scores of people, a small cellphone battery explosion on the capital's underground caused panic Tuesday afternoon.

The station was closed following the incident.

Meanwhile, the services on Circle Line and District Line were also disrupted.

Authorities said they were called after a fire alert at around 12.30 pm this lunchtime.

Another witness, Murtaza Ali Shah, said terrified passengers fled the station in a stampede. There appear to have been no persons injured in the incident.
