WWII veteran, 97, kneels in support of protesting athletes

Brennan Gilmore tweeted the photo of his grandfather John Middlemas Sunday morning before any team took the field.

That Twitter post has been retweeted hundreds of thousands of times. Gilmore quoted his grandfather in the caption and wrote: "Those kids have every right to protest". "He's an incredible man always on the side of justice", Gilmore added later in a tweet. "We want to make people live".

One of the responses from someone not-so-famous is getting a lot of attention.

Middlemas told the Springfield News-Leader he hoped the photo would convey a message of peace and acceptance throughout the "whole world".

President Donald Trump first posted his thoughts on the protests on Twitter Saturday afternoon. He also marched in Springfield in 2013 as a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr.

John Middlemas, 97, was photographed on his knee Sunday by his grandson, Brennan Gilmore, while wearing a World War II veterans hat. Some kneeled during the national anthem, while others locked arms.

"I'm trying to say that you have to love everybody", he said, adding that he wants to teach what he always teaches his grandkids: "Be like Jesus". "A real American, unlike the insane orange guy!" a social media user tweeted. A growing trend among many NFL players is kneeling during the national anthem to show disapproval of America's current civil rights standing.

Veterans and family members of U.S. Servicemen who support the movement said they are acting out of love to the country.
