Violent crimes on the rise in Central Texas

The numbers confirm that almost every type of violent crime increased, with 47 more rapes, 35 more robberies, 179 more aggravated assaults, 330 more larcenies and 112 more motor vehicle thefts reported in 2016.

New FBI data show violent crime in America rose for the second year in a row in 2016.

The report noted that the number of homicides in 2015 was artificially inflated due to the bodies of victims of older crimes being discovered that year. On Sept. 17, Chicago hit 500 homicides this year, a 7% decline from the same period in 2016 (preliminary national data for 2017 from New York University's Brennan Center for Justice also predict a slight decline in violent crime). "Crime is incredibly geographically concentrated - not between Chicago versus other cities - but even within Chicago, which suggests that any sort of take on what's causing this has to take an incredibly nuanced look because it's not just what makes Chicago different from New York City, it's what makes one neighborhood in Chicago different from other neighborhoods". The rate of violent crimes committed per 100,000 residents has declined from 611 in 1997 to 386.3 today. In New Haven, violent crime fell 12% between 2014 and 2016. He said partnerships are the key to the city's success. "And we must do it together".

"They have an incredible job of filtering all information about young men and groups of young men who are prone to carrying and using guns", he said.

The FBI adds that the statistics for the county exclude crime counts for city agencies and other departments that have jurisdiction within each county.

The FBI defines violent crimes as homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults.

A total of 8,787 burglaries and 13,938 larcenies occurred in the Motor City. Clements noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported the city had 10 homicides in 2016, but it actually ended up with 11. Crimes are measured in two categories, violent crime and property crime, encompassing the seven crimes considered major. Boston's 10% drop in property crimes was the largest reduction of New England's largest cities.

Warnings of out-of-control crime and violent criminals roaming the streets were a staple of Donald Trump's populist campaign rhetoric past year, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions has warned of rising crime in many of his public speeches. Property crime was down 6%.
